IKARIA, a small island at the eastern part of Aegean Sea with just 7000 inhabitants, all of a sudden became world famous. The reason is that it belongs to the five regions of the world, the so-called BLUE ZONES, where residents live much longer than average. This longevity has been associated with the Ikarian way of life, its gastronomy and the indulgence of local wine, known since the times of Homer. All of a sudden it’s longevity became world famous due to a NETFLIX documentary! Soon afterwards, LONELY PLANET ranked it in the top-10 places to visit in 2024!
1) FOKIANO BLANC DE NOIR is a premium organic white produced by the typical indigenous grape called ‘FOKIANO’. The most popular Ikarian variety, now available also in BLANC DE NOIR vinifcation.
2) KALABELE comes from the Greek words «kalo ampeli», which literally means “good vineyard”. This is a minimal intervention wine made from the local varieties of Begleri and Assyrtiko. Vinification takes place with the aid of indigenous yeasts that reflect the unique terroir of the island and yield wine of balanced flavor and the unique aromas of green apple, blossom and citrus fruit.
3) BEGLERI is the most characteristic and popular indigenous grape cultivated in Ikaria. This variety is endemic to the island, since Ikaria is the only place where Begleri is being cultivated in Greece. It is cultivated on leveled surfaces all over the island, with low yield rate reaching maximum ~500 kilos/1.000m² Light, fruity, joyful vinification.
