IKARIA, a small island at the eastern part of Aegean Sea with just 7000 inhabitants, all of a sudden became world famous. The reason is that it belongs to the five regions of the world, the so-called BLUE ZONES, where residents live much longer than average. This longevity has been associated with the Ikarian way of life, its gastronomy and the indulgence of local wine, known since the times of Homer. All of a sudden it’s longevity became world famous due to a NETFLIX documentary! Soon afterwards, LONELY PLANET ranked it in the top-10 places to visit in 2024!
Enjoy 1 bottle from 3 different labels by KARIMALIS organic WINERY in this value for money set !!
1 NATURALISTAS comes from RETENO, an ancient variety of Ikaria which disappeared from the Ikarian vineyard over the years as it appeared to be particularly difficult to cultivate. In 2001, George Karimalis founder of KARIMALIS WINERY dared to make the experiment. He replanted RETENO by using vines from old mountain vineyards whose owner was a 103 years old wine-maker. The efforts turned out to be a success story!
2) PHILOSOPHER is a minimal intervention wine made from the local grape varieties of Fokiano and Koundouro (Mantilaria). Vinification takes place with the aid of indigenous yeasts that reflect the unique terroir of the island, while aging takes place in oak barrels that offer a full-body, rich flavor and a naturally occurring high alcohol content.
3) ARALE comes from the Greek word «aragma», which means “to unwind and sit back and relax”, a pastime that is highly appreciated in the Ikarian culture. Balanced flavor and the aroma of plums and cherries in this not-easy-to-quit-drinking wine!
All 3 wines are produced by KARIMALIS WINERY, is a small scale family business, located at an awesome slope of the island, applying sustainable & organic wine-making methods.
