IKARIA, a small island at the eastern part of Aegean Sea with just 7000 inhabitants, all of a sudden became world famous. The reason is that it belongs to the five regions of the world, the so-called BLUE ZONES, where residents live much longer than average. This longevity has been associated with the Ikarian way of life, its gastronomy and the indulgence of local wine, known since the times of Homer.
RETENO is an ancient variety of Ikaria which disappeared from the Ikarian vineyard over the years as it appeared to be particularly difficult to cultivate. In 2001, George Karimalis founder of KARIMALIS WINERY dared to make the experiment. He replanted RETENO by using vines from old mountain vineyards whose owner was a 103 years old wine-maker. The efforts turned out to be a success story! George was one of the first ‘naturalists’ in Greece and a great supporter of wild fermentation with native yeasts. Today, he is still one of the very few who cultivate this demanding variety. NATURALISTAS is a dry red wine, 100% RETENO aged for 6 months in oak barrels that leaves a sweet aftertaste..
Enjoy this natural, old-fashioned, rustic wine with the explosive 15.5% alcohol..
